Almost half of the adults worldwide will experience a headache at some point in time. There are different kinds of headaches that can have their own set of symptoms, happen for unique reasons, and need different treatments.

People with chronic migraine headaches may find it difficult to go to work or school regularly and perform daily activities. Headaches can occur in any part of the head, on both sides of the head, or just one side.

COMMON TYPES OF HEADACHE

  • Tension Headaches: This causes mild to moderate pain and can come and go over time.
  • Migraines: Disabling neurological disorder that can last from 4 hours to 3 days.
  • Chronic Daily Headaches: This type of headache lasts for 15 days or more, sometimes for a month or longer than 3 months.
  • Cluster Headaches: One could feel severe pain or an intense burning behind or around one eye.
  • Sinus Headaches: One can feel constant pain in their cheekbones, forehead, or on the bridge of your nose.

DIAGNOSIS OF HEADACHE

The foremost step is to talk to your doctor about your headaches. The doctor will diagnose a particular type of headache through a description of the condition of the patient, the type of pain, and the pattern of attacks. Once you get your headaches diagnosed correctly, doctors can start the right treatment plan for your symptoms. Doctors suggest blood tests, X-rays, brain scans, such as CT and MRI to look for problems inside your brain that might cause your headaches. Headaches are often not taken seriously because they are periodic, most headaches do not lead to death, and are not contagious.

TREATMENT OF HEADACHE

Headaches can be treated by taking rest and pain relief medication which is available over the counter (OTC), our doctors can prescribe preventative medication, such as anti-epileptic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, and beta-blockers. It is very important to follow the doctor’s instructions because overusing pain relief medication can lead to rebound headaches. There are certain alternative forms of treatment for headaches that are also available such as meditation, acupuncture, etc. but it is very important to consult a doctor/neurologist before going for alternative forms of treatment. Regular exercise, enough rest, and sound sleep contribute to overall health and stress reduction.
